It is now universally accepted that poor oral health can lead to poor general health.
There is a proven link between gum disease and heart disease, and patients with weakened immune systems (such as diabetics or cancer patients) are particularly at risk.
We recommend 3-monthly hygiene visits for any patients with Diabetes due to the proven health benefits of regular gum care for patients with Diabetes.
At Durham City Smiles, alongside our three dentists, we have two very dedicated hygienists in Melanie and Sarah. Their role is to help you with your oral hygiene on both a practical and instructional level and they really can make a difference to your oral health. We have seen some fantastic successes since we’ve been able to offer their service to our patients.
It’s a fact; hygienists make better hygienists than dentists do!
Gum disease is a personal battle and it can be won with perseverance and hard work from both the hygienist and yourself. Melanie and Sarah are confident o treat your gum disease but they can’t do it without your help so you will also need to put the work in if you want to see results.
As the saying goes…
‘You don’t have to brush all your teeth – just the ones you want to keep!’

Coldsores and visiting your hygienist
Many patients suffer from coldsores from time to time. Coldsores are caused by the herpes virus and can be passed on easily. If you notice a coldsore before your appointment you need to contact the practice since we may need to rearrange your appointment. Unfortunately we are unable to treat patients with a coldsore as there is a risk that we could spread the virus to another area of your mouth, this can happen especially when using an ultrasonic cleaner used by the hygienist.
